TSK Architects was engaged by the State of Nevada to plan for the renovation and seismic retrofit of the Heroes Memorial and Veterans Memorial Hall (Veterans Annex) buildings in Carson City, Nevada. This work completed in 2021, is part of the initial project phase that sought to gain a better understanding of the condition of the buildings, possible floor plan improvements, seismic system implementation strategies, and confirm the proposed construction costs. These tasks will help the State of Nevada understand the project impacts and funding requirements to help future planning.
The exterior of both the Heroes Memorial Building and Veterans Annex retain a high degree of architectural integrity. Heroes Memorial is an excellent example of Neo-Classical architecture with its central, pedimented portico, grand entry stairs, and Tuscan-Order columns. The design of the Veterans Annex places emphasizes on the entrance through use of a curved marque with horizontal and vertical bands of articulated stucco. The horizontal banding continues around the building. The interior of both the Heroes Memorial and Veterans Annex have been subject to multiple renovations which have resulted in a great loss of historic fabric. Extant interior character- defining features for the Heroes Memorial building are concentrated in the main entry lobby and staircase and a select few room layouts and finishes on the second level. The Veterans Annex has even fewer remaining interior features – window finishes and two wall niches that flank the entry door.
