Truckee Meadows Fire Station #33, formerly #14, replaces an existing station that is no longer capable of serving the needs of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

The design for this station centered on a few key strategies to improve the quality of life in the facility as well as take advantage of key environmental conditions. Overall, the building is oriented on the site to best utilize the existing site topography and maintain naturally existing storm water flow. This is a critical issue in the Truckee Meadows region and allows for the separation of pavement generated off flow from natural flows. In addition to ensuring that contaminants were directed to appropriate storm water channels, maintaining the natural topography allowed for the majority of the site to be maintained as natural vegetation rather than artificially irrigated.

The site orientation supports the use pattern of the station in other ways. Given that firefighters typically sleep at nontraditional hours, station staff dormitories are located such that they are more easily darkened in the mid to late after noon hours. This allows for staff to sleep when needed with minimal impact from strong late afternoon sun.
